The Steps in the Decision-making Process

People often describe decision making as “choosing among available alternatives.” However, this view is too simplistic, because decision making is a process, not just a simple act of choosing among available alternatives. Decision-making process is a set of eight steps that starts with identifying a problem, then moves through selecting an alternative that can solve it, and concludes with evaluating the effectiveness of the decision.

The steps in the decision-making process are:
  1. Identify a problem
  2. Identify decision criteria
  3. Allocate weights to the criteria
  4. Develop alternatives
  5. Analyze alternatives
  6. Select an alternative
  7. Implement the alternative
  8. Evaluate decision effectiveness
